Course Description

Course Description

Opioids are commonly prescribed for chronic pain. In recent years opioid use has skyrocketed in the United States. It has been estimated that well over 200 million opioid prescriptions have been written each year since 2011. With opioid use reaching epidemic proportions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established new recommendations to help manage the growing concern over opioid prescribing. This CEU provides nurses with vital information regarding the CDC's recommendations for prescribing opioids to increase their knowledge base of the current standards for opioid use in the clinical setting.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify the rationale for the growing concern over opioid prescribing.
  2. Examine the CDC's development methods for their opioid prescribing recommendations.
  3. Explore the CDC's opioid prescribing recommendations, while obtaining an understanding of the clinical evidence which supports them.
