This CE course proposes strategies for the psychiatric technician to help them engage clients of diverse racial and ethnic groups, who can have very different life experiences, values, and traditions, in treatment.  The major racial and ethnic groups in the United States covered in this course are African Americans, Asian Americans including Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, Latinos, Alaska Natives and American Indians, and White Americans.  In addition to providing epidemiological data on each group, this course discusses salient aspects of treatment for these racial/ethnic groups, drawing on clinical and research literature.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Explain the importance of a culturally competent psychiatric technician and how this competency translates to a better understanding and respect for your clients.
  2. Describe which substance use problems are the most serious within each ethnic community discussed in this course.
  3. Compare and contrast the barriers to treatment entry for the different racial and ethnic groups.
  4. Describe recommended group therapy treatment options with clients of each of the racial/ethnic groups.
