This CEU course provides an overview for nurses who work with the HIV population, or work with those that may become infected with HIV, by examining the HIV life cycle, the stages of infection, HIV testing, medicines and treatment, clinical trials, prevention methods, mother-to-child transmission, steps after testing positive for HIV, drug resistance, medication adherence, and immunizations.  Also discussed are the common disorders caused from certain HIV medications, such as diabetes, hepatotoxicity, hyperlipidemia, lactic acidosis, lipodystrophy, osteoporosis, and rash.

 CEU Course Objectives

  1. Enumerate the first signs of HIV infection.
  2. Investigate which vaccines are recommended for those that have HIV.
  3. Elucidate the tests that are conducted as part of a baseline evaluation once a patient is diagnosed with HIV.
  4. Provide the factors that may increase the risk of hepatotoxicity due to HIV medicines.
  5. Describe the stages of HIV and identify during which stage the risk of HIV transmission is greatest.
