Course Description

CEU Course Description

This CE course describes a 12-week cognitive behavioral anger management group treatment.  Each of the 12 90-minute weekly sessions is described in detail with specific instructions for psychiatric technicians, including key conceptual components of the treatment and homework assignments for the group participants.  Topics covered include: the purpose, overview, group rules, conceptual framework, and rationale for the anger management treatment; teaching group members how to analyze an anger episode and to identify the events and cues that indicate an escalation of anger; the aggression cycle; progressive muscle relaxation; the A-B-C-D Model of cognitive restructuring; the techniques of thought stopping; assertiveness, aggression, passivity, and the Conflict Resolution Model; and helping group members gain a better understanding of their anger with regard to the interactions they had with their parents and families that they grew up in and how these past interactions have influenced their current behavior, thoughts, feelings, and attitudes and the way they now interact with others as adults.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Discuss immediate and preventative strategies the technician can help clients learn for controlling anger.
  2. Enumerate for whom reporting abuse of supersedes confidentiality laws.
  3. Compare and contrast the four types of CBT interventions that are most often used when treating anger disorders.
  4. Elucidate the cues to anger and each category that these cues would fall under.
  5. Describe the differences between aggression, anger, and hostility.
