It is essential for health care professionals administering care to patients suffering from mental illness to be familiar with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This course addresses some of the more frequently asked questions regarding the appropriateness, under the HIPAA rules, for a health care professional to share the protected health information of a patient who is being treated for a mental health condition.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Determine when it is appropriate for a health care professional to share the protected health information of a patient who is being treated for a mental health condition.
  2. Clarify when HIPAA permits health care professionals to communicate with various individuals that may be involved in a patient's health care, such as patients' family and friends.
  3. Review HIPAA-related information regarding: psychotherapy notes, patients who may be considered minors, personal representatives and alcohol and drug abuse confidentiality.
