CEU Course Description

Measles, once considered a common childhood illness, was officially declared eliminated from the United States in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the past few years, however, multiple factors, especially vaccine hesitancy, have contributed to a resurgence of this viral illness in the United States, infecting an exponentially growing number of individuals. With the growing number of infections, nurses are coming in contact with an increasing number of patients who may have a confirmed or suspected case of the measles, as well as those who experience serious complications related to measles infection.  In order to provide appropriate care to these patients, and to prevent further spread of this illness, nurses must understand what measles is, how the virus is spread, what populations are at risk, signs and symptoms of illness, treatment and prevention strategies, and evidence-based nursing interventions.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Define measles
  2. Understand how the measles virus is spread
  3. Review the populations and risk and populations who are at risk for complications
  4. Identify signs and symptoms of a measles infection
  5. Outline treatment and prevention strategies for measles
