CEU Course Description 

Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects millions of people each year. Nurses are often the first healthcare workers to interact with those experiencing IPV. As a result, it is imperative that nurses be prepared to provide trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) to these patients to improve outcomes and prevent abuse. Nurses can improve their ability to care for patients affected by IPV by reviewing the different types of IPV, understanding the dynamics of abuse, recognizing risk factors for both victims and perpetrators of IPV, identifying screening tools and assessment techniques to identify those experiencing IPV, reviewing the physical and mental health effects of IPV, and outlining nursing implications for care, including principles of TVIC.

1. Define intimate partner violence, including various types of IPV
2. Understand the dynamics of abuse
3. Recognize risk factors associated with victims and perpetrators of IPV
4. Identify screening tools and assessment techniques to aid in identifying those experiencing IPV
