CEU Course Description

Pericarditis accounts for a small percentage of patients who seek medical care due to chest pain; however, it is important for nurses to be knowledgeable about this condition, as optimal outcomes depend on timely diagnosis and treatment. In 2025, the American College of Cardiology published updated guidelines regarding the diagnosis and treatment of pericarditis. Nurses caring for adults in inpatient and outpatient settings should be able to define pericarditis and its types, identify risk factors for this condition, recognize its signs, symptoms, and complications, and understand diagnostic, treatment, and prevention practices. They should also be aware of the nurse’s role in promoting optimal outcomes for patients who experience pericarditis.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Define pericarditis and the various types that occur
  2. Identify risk factors of pericarditis
  3. Recognize signs, symptoms, and complications of pericarditis
  4. Understand evidence-based diagnostic, treatment, and prevention methods
  5. Review the nurse’s role in promoting optimal outcomes for patients experiencing pericarditis
