CE Course Description

Individuals with mental illness are overrepresented in the U.S. criminal justice system, and many prisons and jails are not equipped to effectively handle this growing population. The purpose of this intermediate level continuing education course, developed using information from the Urban Institute, is to address how those with mental illness are processed and treated in the criminal justice system and discusses the implications of insufficient or inadequate care. The severity of the problem is discussed, as well as policy recommendations and promising strategies to assist mentally ill criminal offenders.

CE Course Objectives

  1. Identify the scope of the problem of mental health illness among individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
  2. Review current practice in the processing of mentally ill offenders.
  3. Assess societal and economic costs associated with recidivism and insufficient care for this population.
  4. Summarize the characteristics of various criminal justice programs and interventions for mentally ill individuals.
  5. Highlight promising strategies to tackle challenges involved in the reintegration of mentally ill offenders into society.
  6. Discuss research and policy recommendations to best serve individuals with mental health problems in criminal justice setting.
