CEU Course Description 

Drug testing can contribute to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients seen in primary care, the management of the treatment of chronic pain, and the identification and treatment of substance use disorders.  This CEU course describes the role of drug testing in primary care settings and its historical roots in workplace testing; defines the terms and practices used in drug testing; presents the mechanics of testing and describes the steps that nurses can take to prepare for drug testing; provides information about implementing testing in clinical practice; and presents important aspects of urine drug testing for specific drugs.  Also included in this course is technical information on specific tests used for initial or screening tests, confirmatory tests, and specimen validity tests.

 CEU Course Objectives

  1. Discuss the most common technologies used to perform screening and confirmatory tests.
  2. Enumerate what should be explained to the patient prior to testing.
  3. Explain what the window of detection depends on.
  4. Investigate the current clinical guidelines for drug tests for pain management with opioids.
  5. Examine what drug test panels are designed to do.
  6. Describe under what conditions specimen adulteration should be suspected.
